The first time that one introduced to Generation UCAN was at the 2015 Boston Marathon. I will be honest, I went to the UCAN event for one reason. The 2014 Boston Marathon Champion, Meb Keflezighi was there speaking and meeting runners and fans. I did try a sample of Generation UCAN but that was it, never put much thought into trying it before runs and seeing how it could help me.
So fast forward about 14 months. When asked if I would be willing to try Generation UCAN, I decided to give it a shot. I received in the mail 5 individual packages of drink mix (1 serving each), a shaker bottle, and information about Generation UCAN.
About Generation UCAN
Generation UCAN makes a few different products but I will focus on the drinks. They are made of a SuperStarch, which is a revolutionary complex carbohydrate “that uniquely stabilizes blood sugar and causes virtually no reaction from the fat-storage hormone insulin.”. It is also gluten free. With the super starch, there is no crash, no insulin spikes, allows fat to burn, and doesn’t bother your stomach. Check out what doctors have to say about Generation UCAN.
My Experience with Generation UCAN
I tried Generation UCAN before longer runs and speed workouts mainly. I drank it about 30-45 minutes before the workout. Here is what I noticed: more sustained energy. During the speed work especially, it felt like during rest periods I was able to recover a little quicker and get ready for the next interval. Recovery after the workout seemed to be a little quicker as well. During the long run, it felt like I was just able to sustain my desired pace with a little more ease, feeling comfortable.
I also used it before today’s Sunburst Half Marathon this morning (glad I used it a few times before the race, never try anything new on race day.). The race didn’t go as well as I hoped but that didn’t have anything to do with UCAN. I did feel like I still had some energy left at the end, enough for a finishing kick. Best part, no IG issues during the race.
Flavors
I was given a Tropical Orange, Cranberry raspberry, lemonade, and 2 chocolates.
If you struggle with liking the flavors, check out these recipes that UCAN recommends. I have even heard that some don’t like the chocolate mix all that much (I was worried about the chocolate flavor, but I didn’t think it was too bad at all). My favorite was the tropical orange. The cranberry raspberry seem to leave a bit more after taste than I care for. You can mix them up with as much or as little water as you like. I don’t like it too strong, so I mixed mine up with 24oz of water.
Overall
Overall, I think Generation UCAN is a great product and would recommend it for any athlete looking for a boost in energy levels without the crash. Some flavors are better than others, but that’s the great thing about the trial packages, get a few flavors to try and decide what you like best.
